The ‘Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships’, will assist up to 4000 students, most from under-privileged backgrounds, to study vital science and maths-based subjects at the UK’s leading research-intensive universities.
These scholarships will provide important additional support for talented individuals from poorer backgrounds who might otherwise be deterred from coming to university
Professor Brian Cantor, Vice-Chancellor
They have been established thanks to a £3 million donation from Dr Naim Dangoor, a successful property developer.
The scholarships at York will be offered to 30 full-time students doing undergraduate courses in a range of science and technology subjects.
Dr Dangoor has said that this scholarship, named in honour of his father Eliahou Dangoor, is his way of thanking the country that gave him refuge after he left Iraq in the 1960s. It is hoped that this ambitious scheme will encourage more young people to consider studying STEM subjects at one of the country’s leading universities.
The Chairs of both the 1994 Group and Russell Group have warmly welcomed the donation and the creation of the scholarship.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, Professor Brian Cantor, said: “We are committed to the principle of providing a high quality education for students and opportunity for all, regardless of background, and this generous donation from Dr Naim Dangoor will help us to achieve that. These scholarships will provide important additional support for talented individuals from poorer backgrounds who might otherwise be deterred from coming to university.
“They will help students to fulfil their potential to become the top scientists and engineers of tomorrow by studying at York, one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities.”
The 1994 Group, of which York is a member, and the Russell Group of universities will administer the scholarships total funding for which will rise to £4 million through matched funding from the Government.
Professor Paul Wellings, Vice Chancellor of Lancaster University and Chair of the 1994 Group of universities said:
“These scholarships are a tremendous addition to the range of bursaries our universities offer to help ensure that students fulfil their potential and are encouraged to apply to leading universities.”
ENDS
This scholarship will have no effect on students’ entitlement to loans for fees or maintenance, grants or other institutional bursaries.
