Dr Steve Tear, from the Department of Physics, will introduce his audience to the nanoworld and consider the possibilities that arise from working at a very small scale including the ability to tailor the properties of materials to meet specific needs. He will also explain some of the instruments scientists use to make this possible.
His lecture, on 3 November, is the first from The nanoworld: Exploration and exploitation, a new series of six by scientists from the University and visiting speakers.
The series will explain the world of nanoscience and the role research in this area plays in helping improve understanding of materials and processes and supports the development of new technologies in fields such as medicine.
Dr Tear’s lecture will take place in Room P/L001, in the Department of Physics at 7pm. Admission is free and open to all.
Alongside the lecture series, the University is also offering visitors two opportunities to see the world class nanoscience research facility, the York JEOL Nanocentre.
The first opportunity to visit the York JEOL Nanocentre will be prior to Dr Tear’s lecture, at 5.30pm. Admission is by pre-booking only. Telephone (01904) 432622 or email publiclectures@york.ac.uk to reserve a place.
Visitors will have a second chance to visit the Nanocentre prior to another lecture in the series on 8 December.
