University launches student internship bureau

Posted on 25 September 2009

The University of York has launched a Student Internship Bureau, which brings together students seeking project-based work experience with appropriate employers in the York and North Yorkshire area.

This summer, interns have been working across the region for a number of organisations, including Science City York (SCY).

We want to hear from more organisations who feel they might benefit from a student internship

Helen Staley

Science City York, a key promoter of York and North Yorkshire’s economic regeneration, was eager to appoint an intern to assist with the research and analysis of policy to help influence and promote SCY’s role throughout the UK.

The Research Internship opportunity attracted a large number of highly-qualified University of York applicants, so SCY decided to take on two Christina Engels and Ingrid Merkel. SCY asked them to compile a database of key contacts from public bodies and to research and review relevant policy. They also helped to develop marketing materials about the region’s innovations and strengths.

Helen Staley, the University of York Student Internship Bureau Officer, said: “We offer local businesses a range of cost-effective and flexible internship options, including vacation internships, internships during term times and a subsidised graduate internship scheme. All the options are designed to be light on adminstration, and are intended to add tangible value to businesses, while stretching and developing the interns.

“We want to hear from more organisations who feel they might benefit from a student internship.”

Fay Treloar, SCY’s Operations Manager said “This has been an excellent programme for Science City York to be involved with and every aspect of the service received has been highly professional.  We were very lucky to take on Christina and Ingrid, who have worked on a number of research projects around science and innovation.  Both students have produced some excellent pieces of work, which Science City York will be able to take forward.”

Imogen Foster, SCY’s Communications Manager added:  “The database that has been created is an invaluable and efficient tool that has alerted us to new key marketing and press contacts. Christina’s and Ingrid’s work gives us something that we will continue to build on.”
