Experts in the University of York’s world-leading Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence have been planning a joint venture since summer 2007, when the Shanghai representatives first visited York.
International collaborations such as these reflect the importance of the Centre's work on industrial chemistry and environmental issues

Now representatives of leading Chinese organisations, including the Shanghai Chemical Industry Association and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, will meet with York staff to exchange the latest technical information in the area of sustainable chemistry — and to discuss how to use these concepts in the cutting-edge research, innovation, education and training already taking place in both Shanghai and York.
One major area of interest is in planning a green chemistry training course to be delivered by York scientists in Shanghai.
The Chinese delegates will also work with the Centre to help exploit York’s unique experience in green chemistry and sustainable development education and training, including a Master’s course, masterclasses and professional development activities.
Professor Paul Walton, Head of the Department of Chemistry, said "The Department is very pleased to welcome fellow scientists from Shanghai to its Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence. International collaborations such as these reflect the importance of the Centre's work on industrial chemistry and environmental issues."
Dr Helen Coombs of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence said "Collaborating with our opposite numbers in China has proved very fruitful over the past 12 months — but this is only the start. Our future collaborations will build on the expertise we have here in the Department of Chemistry, especially in areas like renewable resources, clean chemical synthesis and bio-materials."
