The University of York is hosting a national symposium this autumn, focusing on promoting excellence in the movement of the critically ill.
The event on 26 September 2007 is organised by the Department of Health Sciences and supported by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
It will be of interest to all professionals involved in the transfer of patients, working in emergency departments, theatres and critical care areas, regardless of level or grade. This includes medical staff, nurses, operating department practitioners, ambulance staff and search and rescue staff.
There is a high level of interest professionally in inter-hospital transfers

Participants will learn from experienced agencies with well established reputations, for example those involved in repatriating service personnel from areas of current military operations.
Alison Foster, Lecturer in Acute and Critical Care, said "There is a high level of interest professionally in inter-hospital transfers as this happens much more frequently now. For example, when TV presenter Richard Hammond was seriously injured he was transferred by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance from York to Leeds and then by private air ambulance from Leeds to Bristol. We know that NHS Trusts are looking to develop best practice guidelines and our aim is to promote ‘gold standards’ of care."
