Jazz enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to hear music from the Ray Spencer Collection, which was donated to the University’s Department of Music by the musician, critic and writer who died in 1992.
The collection contains more than 1,000 live, broadcast and compilation recordings. The Spencer Collection evening will be a two-part concert on Sunday 1 July at Filey’s Evron Centre Concert Hall at 7.30pm.
The first part is a recital reflecting both the contents of the collection and Mr Spencer's original compositions, while the second will be a jazz standards performance.
There is a tremendous amount of interest in the Spencer Collection and we are very lucky to be able to celebrate it during the festival

The concert will be performed by Brazilian pianist and composer Zezo Olimpio and his quartet. Zezo Olimpio, who came to York on a Roslyn Lyons Scholarship is studying for an MA in Jazz and Improvised music. There will also be an exhibition staged by musician Joe Browning, who is an expert on the Spencer Collection.
Filey Festival Secretary, Joyce Hoblyn, said: "This is something that has created a real buzz - not just in this area but further afield too. There is a tremendous amount of interest in the Spencer Collection and we are very lucky to be able to celebrate it during the festival."
The University also has links with a number of free lunchtime events starting at 1pm at the White Lodge Hotel.
Londoners Phil Merriman (piano) and Raphael Clarkson (trombone), who met at the University of York when studying for a degree in music, will perform on Monday 2 July. Based on their keen interest in jazz, they formed a duo influenced heavily by jazz pianist John Taylor (who lectures at the University) and the contemporary European school of jazz.
On 3 July, the Caramel Trio will perform the Debussy Violin Sonata and English partsong to Cabaret, and lots more, in various combinations of violin, piano, harp, and voices.
On Wednesday 4 July, TrioAnon, a female vocal trio, will draw on their extensive repertoire spanning plainchant to contemporary. Sarah Clarke, Jessica Main and Phillipa Thomas are all music students at the University, originally meeting as members of the award winning ‘Cantamus Girls Choir’ based in Nottinghamshire.
