York’s new education research centre in Westminster launch

Posted on 6 November 2007

The launch takes place today, at the Houses of Parliament, of a pioneering research centre at the University of York which aims to shape the educational landscape in our schools.

On the day of the State Opening of Parliament when the Government announced a raft of new education measures, Schools Minister Lord Adonis will speak at the event that will introduce the new Institute for Effective Education (IEE).

The Institute will:

  • Develop effective education programmes for schools
  • Conduct high-quality research on education programmes and practice
  • Write accessible systematic reviews of existing educational research
  • Encourage policy-makers to support evidence-based programmes in education

The IEE’s researchers will endeavour to transform the relationship between researchers, teachers and policy makers so that education practice is driven by good evidence.

The IEE has been established at York through an £11 million grant from the Bowland Charitable Trust.

The Institute is led by distinguished researcher Professor Robert Slavin, who was previously Director of the Centre for Research and Reform in Education (CRRE) at Johns Hopkins University in the USA. The IEE’s strategy board is chaired by former Secretary of State for Education, Baroness Estelle Morris.
