Philosopher aims for chart-topping Christmas

Posted on 22 November 2007

A philosopher at the University of York has set out to take the music industry by storm — in a bid to top the Christmas charts.

Nick Jones, a teaching fellow in the University’s Department of Philosophy, plays saxophones on the song Smells Like Christmas Time, recorded by Anarchy Xmas and due for release on 10 December.

As far as we know, this is the first time anyone has used networking sites to put together a band and promote a charity record

The band is made up of student musicians from across the UK, who met through the networking website Facebook. It was the brainchild of two Sheffield students Iz El-Bahnasy and Tom Langhorn.

Recently the coveted Christmas number 1 spot has been dominated by acts from TV reality shows, but Nick and Anarchy Xmas think the time has come for something different.

"It’s time to take on the big boys," said Nick, "and this is a real grassroots effort. As far as we know, this is the first time anyone has used networking sites to put together a band and promote a charity record."

The group already has over 2000 supporters on the Facebook site, who voted on which song to record and which charities to support. Sales will benefit Oxfam, NSPCC, Cancer Research UK, Shelter and Friends of the Earth.

Smells Like Christmas Time by Anarchy Xmas is released on 10 December as a download from the iTunes site. Learn more about the project, and support it by signing up online, at http://www.anarchyxmas.com/.
