Buzz Palmer, a PhD student in the Department of Biology, beat off competition from more than 70 other entrants to take top prize in the UK GRAD Yorkshire & North East Hub "Communicating to the Public" Poster Competition.His poster was titled "Bone and cartilage constructs fabricated from stem cells."
Chair of the judges‘ panel, Bill Pigg, director of research and development at Johnson & Johnson one of the competition sponsors, said: "Overall the standard was exceptionally high. It was a close run contest but the panel felt that the winner best met that balance of education and accessibility."
Communicating research to a general audience.... in an understandable way is just one of the skills that we aim to help our students develop.

Dr Karen Clegg, Director of the University’s Graduate Training Unit (GTU) which promoted the competition at York, said: "We are thrilled for Buzz. Communicating research to a general audience involves presenting complex ideas in an understandable way and it is just one of the skills that we aim to help our students develop."
Buzz Palmer added: "I thoroughly enjoyed participating, and I’m extremely happy to win the UK Grad poster competition. The opportunity to communicate science to the public is an important aspect of our work so that the public understand our research. The prize money has already gone on a new surfboard!"
Two other University of York students -- Susan Major (Institute of Railway Studies & Transport History) and Scott Crawford (Biology)-took part in the event at the Carnegie Stadium, Headingley, Leeds.
