University of York seals accord with accountants’ group

Posted on 3 October 2007

The University of York is to offer the opportunity of high quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to members of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

The association’s 120,000 members work in a wide range of business sectors and many wish to update and extend their professional training. Under the agreement—the University’s first with a professional organisation—CIMA members will qualify for a 10 per cent discount on selected CPD and Masters courses at York.

Programmes will include the online e-Masters courses in Public Policy Management and Public Administration. These include modules on leading and managing change, the environment and the policy process, globalisation, economics or public service reform.

CIMA members will also be able to take modules from the Masters course in Health Sciences. The Department of Health Sciences offers three taught courses—in Evidence Based Practice, International Health and in Population Health, together with a generic course in Health Sciences.

The University’s CPD Manager Amanda Selvaratnam said: "CIMA will target members who want to improve their CPD portfolios. They select from a range of postgraduate modules those which are of most relevance to their profession. From our perspective, CIMA has such an extensive membership, it’s an excellent way of reaching an international audience."

Professor Steve Toms, Head of York Management School, said: "The link with CIMA helps us to both recruit high quality students and understand the demands of the accounting profession. It will allow the development of CIMA-accredited degrees which may lead to exemptions from associated professional exams. It will also widen access, substituting the CIMA qualification for standard A-level and relevant degree entry routes into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes."

Robert Jelly, Director of Education at CIMA, added: "CIMA is very pleased about this new partnership with University of York. As part of our continuing effort to support our members with their Continuing Professional Development, this partnership represents a significant benefit. It provides a great way for CIMA members to further develop their careers and will also help employers win the war for talent and retain valuable finance staff by supporting their employees’ continuing development and career advancement."
