The parade which is bigger and better than ever will create a carnival atmosphere in York city centre - and raise funds for the Lord Mayor's Charities. The procession, organised by York RAG in association with Monteys rock cafe, aims to demonstrate students' achievements and their vibrant role in the community. With the Lord Mayor, Coun Janet Greenwood, and University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Cantor, in attendance and accompanied by a samba band, the procession will take a circular route from Parliament Street starting at 1.30pm on Saturday 11 February.

The start will be marked by the launch of hundreds of balloons, as fund-raising for Macmillan Cancer Trust and St Leonard's Hospice gets under way.
Throughout the day, various student groups will be performing on the stage in Parliament Street, including the student award-winning station URY and Capoeira martial artists as well as the Folk, Afro Caribbean societies and the Zamar gospel choir.
Procession co-ordinator, Colin Hindson, said: "We have drastically altered the route to include the city's main shopping and historic areas. With the addition of the stage and more varied performances, this year York RAG hopes to top the amazing successes of previous years.
"Students have spent weeks preparing their costumes and practising their routines, and we would like to invite everyone to come and support us and help to raise money for charity."
The Procession is the first event in Students Union's RAG week, which will involve events in a range of city and University venues to raise money for local and national charities.
