Overall, York is seventh in the newspaper's league table of the 119 UK institutions, which this year was based on a range of additional measures including the National Student Satisfaction survey and the views of head teachers of Britain's leading schools .
The Sunday Times says the new methodology confirmed York 's qualities, adding that the University, which was established in 1963, had "achieved a reputation for academic excellence that rivals institutions many hundreds of years its senior."
It says that York is consistently popular with students. The University receives on average nine applications for each undergraduate place - only three others received more, while York's "research is out of the top drawer too."
The Sunday Times says that York is ranked third for the quality of its teaching and sixth for research while it was top university in Yorkshire.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor said: "The Sunday Times has introduced a range of new measures in their University Guide this year and, even with these new criteria, York is still firmly in the top ten of British universities. This is another endorsement of our continuing academic quality."
