Chinese Olympics team in training at the University of York

Posted on 22 November 2005

A delegation of senior Chinese Government officials, who will be helping to run the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, is visiting the University of York this week to pick up tips from leading academics and civil servants from across the UK on sports and event management.

The University's Department of Politics is hosting the visit by the 26 Chinese civil servants who will spend three days discussing a range of issues including performance management in central Government, sports management and emergency planning.

We believe that the programme at York will be an exciting and thought-provoking one for our Chinese guests

Professor Mark Evans

The visit involving the group from the National School of Administration in Beijing starts on 23 November, comes as preparations start in earnest for the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

The University has links with the National School and the two institutions have already organised a number of training activities. The National School approached the Head of the Department of Politics, Professor Mark Evans, during a visit to Beijing earlier this year to organise next week's event.

Professor Evans said that the programme would be one of a series of three being organised this year for Chinese Olympic Games officials - the others are in Germany and at the Kennedy School at Harvard University in the USA.

"We believe that the programme at York will be an exciting and thought-provoking one for our Chinese guests," he said.

Lecturers will include Dr Leigh Robinson, Programme Leader in Sports and Leisure Management at Loughborough University; Adrian Richardson, of the Events Management School at Leeds Metropolitan University and Francis Coxhead, of the Cabinet Office, as well as Professor Evans.

During their visit, the Chinese delegation will meet the Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Brian Cantor and visit places of historical interest in the York area.
