The Innovation Centre opened in 1995 and provides space for 24 businesses. This year saw the opening of an extension which provides further purpose-built office space and support systems for small or start-up businesses. In addition, it houses the region's first speculatively-built state-of-the-art laboratories.
Susanne Walker has been Manager of the Innovation Centre since its inception. Her responsibilities have encompassed all the Centre's activities. She has also been responsible for developing, financing, and overseeing the construction of the Innovation Centre Extension this year. Educated in Denmark, she has a background in commercial linguistics and international business, and has worked at the University of York since 1992.
New developments on the Science Park include a 30,000 square foot bioincubator, which will provide a range of services to assist the development of biotechnology research into commercial products. The project is a collaboration between the University of York, York Science Park Ltd. and Yorkshire Forward.
Commenting on her appointment, Susanne Walker said, "I hope that the Innovation Centre will continue to play a key role in York's economy, as well as further strengthening the University's reputation for excellence in scientific research."
