Writers from the British Isles and their influence in early Medieval Bavaria. (Exchange with Institut fuer Oesterreichische Geshichtsforshung Professor Dr A Scharer)
Our knowledge of the literary culture and ideology of the early medieval world advances through detailed and exacting studies of texts and individuals as well as works of synthesis. Thus, localizing and attributing texts are tasks which must go hand in hand with attempts to sketch a larger picture. The project aims to answer specific questions about two eighth century writers. The findings will, in turn, contribute to a larger view of the interpretation and re-evaluation of insular activity in early medieval Bavaria.
Emigres from Anglo-Saxon England and Ireland, often called peregrini, played a crucial note in introducing and spreading literacy and christianity to continental Europe in the early middle ages. Using manuscripts and printed sources, my research will investigate the writings and careers of two of these peregrini who were active eighth-century south Germany.
