Professor Cooke has been Vice-Chancellor since October 1993. He joined the University from University College London, where he was Vice-Provost and Professor of Geography.
"The University has been very fortunate in its vice-chancellors," said Dr Kenneth Dixon, Chair of the University Council. "Since joining us in 1993, Ron Cooke has contributed tirelessly and with great success to developing the University and building its reputation. I am delighted, of course, that the University will continue to have the benefit of his leadership until September next year."
"Ron Cooke has been outstanding, not only in nurturing the University's high quality teaching and research during a period of expansion and change for higher education, but also in promoting the work of the University so that it is now universally recognised as one of the best in Britain," said Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Matthew.
Later this term, the Council and the Senate will establish a Joint Committee whose task will be to recommend the appointment of Professor Cooke's successor.
