Home Office minister to open York's Centre for Criminal Justice
Posted on 19 September 2001
The Rt Hon Keith Bradley MP, Minister of State for Criminal Justice, Sentencing and Law Reform, will speak about the Government's approach to crime when he opens the new Centre for Criminal Justice, Economics and Psychology at the University of York on Thursday 20 September 2001.
The Centre, which is a strategic partnership between the Home Office and
the University of York, will look at ways in which to reduce the impact
of crime on society and improve public safety.
Initially, the Centre will concentrate on evaluation studies of the
costs and benefits of various interventions for the prevention and
reduction of crime. In the longer term, the Centre will develop research
aimed at improving understanding of criminal behaviour.
The Centre will also play a major role in disseminating knowledge on
criminal behaviour and policy issues and will host courses and
secondments for a variety of Home Office staff. The Centre will also
undertake research projects funded by other organisations with key
interests in criminal justice.
The Director of the Centre, Professor Cynthia McDougall said: "It is our
aim to carry out high quality research which will be of real value to
policy-makers and practitioners, providing practical solutions to
operational problems."
