Posted on 25 October 2000
The communications company Nortel has funded the refurbishment of a new software teaching laboratory in the department of Computer Science at the University of York.
The laboratory will be opened by Philip Hargrave, Chief Scientist of Nortel Europe on Friday 27 October.
The £67,000 refurbishment of all the work stations in the software laboratory will enable 96 students to receive software instruction on an almost one-to-one basis.
Nortel has a growing relationship with the University: it currently funds research in the departments of Mathematics and Electronics and takes a number of Computer Science students on work placements.
Professor Alan Burns, Head of the Department of Computer Science said: "We are immensely grateful to Nortel for their generous help in equipping this laboratory. It will be of great value to our students, nearly all of whom go on to careers in leading IT companies. It is also a pleasure to welcome our friend and colleague, Philip Hargrave, to York."
