University of York's high-tech firm opens in Scotland

YES specialises in testing high-tech electronic items such as computers to ensure they do not interfere with essential equipment, operating a UKAS (UK Accredited Service) at Castleford in West Yorkshire, and consultancy and training services from its campus headquarters in York.
YES bought the EMC Test Centre located at the Donibristle Industrial Estate, in Fife, in February. It was previously owned by GEC-Marconi Avionics, and an opening ceremony on Tuesday will be performed by University Vice-Chancellor Professor Ron Cooke.
"We are delighted to add eight new staff members and the facilities of the Test Centre at Donibristle to complement and expand our portfolio of activities," said Managing Director Chris Marshman from the YES headquarters at the University of York. "For our customers, it will mean an increased scope of accredited testing and with the two complementary test laboratories in Castleford and Fife, greater flexibility to service clients' needs."
Donibristle, which currently has a turnover of £400,000, has customers in the North Sea oil industry, plus electronics companies based in Japan and the USA that have invested in Scotland.
YES has a unique and strong relationship with the Applied Electromagnetics Research Group in the Department of Electronics at York providing it with unrivalled access to electromagnetic compatibility expertise in measurements, modelling, design and training. In collaboration with the research group, YES undertakes EMC research for the Radio Communications Agency of the DTI, DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency), and the European Union. Product developments include the BILOG wideband antenna series and the Comparison Noise Emitter (CNE).
