The score continues York's high marks for Subject Review, which have led to its dominating the university teaching 'league tables' in recent years.
The score is a double for Psychology, which achieved the highest possible research rating of Five Star in the last Research Assessment Exercise.
This is York's third 'perfect score'. Electronics achieved a score of 24 in January 1998 and Physics in November 1999. Of the 16 subjects assessed so far at York, 13 have achieved scores which rate the departments 'excellent'.
The Subject Review process measures the quality of teaching in every subject in every university. York and Cambridge have achieved the highest scores of Britain's 98 universities for Subject Review.
The Review team from the Quality Assurance Agency visited the Department of Psychology from 7 to 10 February. Their visit was a formal process which looked at six aspects: curriculum design; teaching, learning and assessment; student progression and achievement; student support; learning resources; and quality management and enhancement. Each area was awarded a score out of 4 (total possible marks: 24). The Department submitted a document in advance which detailed aims and objectives in each of the six areas. As part of their audit, the assessors sat in on lectures, seminars and other activities.
"We're delighted with the result and see it as a reflection of the quality of the staff in Psychology. They are the greatest asset of the department" said Professor Charles Hulme, head of the department of Psychology.
Subject Review is an ongoing process. The University of York's results so far are as follows:
