Insight into sector of historic York
Posted on 6 April 1999
A course looking at the history and future of a crucial part of York's heritage is offered by the University of York this spring. 'The precinct of St Mary's Abbey, York: past, present and future' will examine some of York's finest buildings and historic collections in nine talks which are open to the public.
The 'precinct' extends from the Museum Gardens and St Mary's Abbey to the City Art Gallery and includes the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, York City Library, the King's Manor and the Yorkshire Museum. Running from Museum Street to Exhibition Square, the area includes key medieval sites and most of its historic collections and archives.
"This course is highly unusual," said Lesley Booth, co-ordinator of the University's Centre for Continuing Education. "It will include talks by staff from the Yorkshire Museum, the University, the Art Gallery, the Council and the Yorkshire Philosophical Society in a unique and exciting collaboration. This is the first time people from so many organisations have joined together to run a public course."
Topics will include the history of the King's Manor and how it is used now by the University, the collections of the City Art Gallery, the archives held by the Council and the art and archaeology collections of the Yorkshire Museum.
The course, starting on 21 April and finishing on 16 June, will be held in different venues in the 'precinct' from 7 to 9 pm on consecutive Wednesday evenings. All are welcome to register and fees are £31.50 for the whole course, or £4 per session. For further information the public should contact Mary Banbury on York 434620.
