Latest research awards total £3.7m

New research grants worth £3,736,497 were announced at the University of York's recent meeting of Council. This continues York's successful record in attracting research grants and contracts from industry, government, the EU, research councils, and charitable bodies. The University has one of the highest incomes per researcher in the university sector. Last year (1997/98), the University received grants totalling £20.7m.
New grants include:
- £420,000 from Cell Analysis Ltd to study cell separation using dielectophoresis for applications in leukaemia treatment, analysis of food poisoning bacteria, and the detection of cryptosporidium in water. The grant holder is Dr Bernard Betts, department of Biology.
- £13,786 from the Environment and Heritage Service Northern Ireland for an exploration of aspects of living conditions and the economy of a small Early Christian (7th and 8th centuries) farmstead in NE Ireland through studies of fossil plant and invertebrate remains. The grant holder is Dr Allan Hall of the Environmental Archaeology Unit.
- £120,655 from the Economic and Social Research Council to measure preferences regarding equity and variations in health. The grant holders are Professor Peter Smith (department of Economics), Roger Burrows (Centre for Housing Policy), and Professor Alan Williams (Centre for Health Economics).
- £15,129 from the NHS Executive for a systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to promote the uptake of breast feeding. The grant holder is Professor Jos Kleijnen, NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. (Joint project with the University of Leeds.)
