Based at the Centre for Women's Studies at the University of York, Raw Nerve Books will publish innovative and controversial books in the fields of gender and women's studies. It aims to publish books quickly and cheaply, and the list will favour unusual publications - short monographs, edited collections and experimental works - often neglected by established publishers. Raw Nerve also aims to involve authors in the publishing process in a more direct way than is usual, aiming for an equal relationship between writer and publisher.
Raw Nerve's first publications are White?Women: critical perspectives on race and gender, described as an exciting and accessible collection of writing about women and whiteness in Britain, and Celebrating Women's Friendships: past, present and future, which explores women's friendships in politics, poetry, letters and cyberspace.
"York is a surprisingly good place for those interested in women's writing and feminist issues," says Dr Ann Kaloski-Naylor of the Centre for Women's Studies. "We have the Centre at the University, the bookshop Libertas, a growing women's dance scene, a packed programme around International Women's Day in March, and now Raw Nerve Books."
Raw Nerve Books is run by Ann Kaloski-Naylor, Heloise Brown and Madi Gilkes and is supported by the Centre for Women's Studies and the Department of English.
The launch, which will include details of two new 'provocative' ventures, will take place at 7.30 pm in the King's Manor, Exhibition Square on Monday 6 December. Free tickets are available from Raw Nerve at the Centre for Women's Studies (tel 01904 433674) or Libertas bookshop (tel 01904 625522).
