Latest research awards total £2.7m

New research grants worth £2,778,273 were announced at the University of York's meeting of Council on 19 February.
This continues York's successful record in attracting research grants and contracts from industry, government the EU, research councils, and charitable bodies. New grants are announced at the University Council four times a year. Last year (1997/98), the University received grants totalling £20.7m.
New grants include:
- £6,300 from the Dean and Chapter of York for phase 3 of the Minster Library excavation. The grant holder is Professor Martin Carver, department of Archaeology.
- 20,000 Euro from the European Commission for developments to improve the performance of pipeless church organs. The grant holder is Professor David Howard, department of Electronics.
- 496,162 Euro from the European Commission to monitor the development of social protection reform in the 12 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The grant holder is Professor John Ditch, department of Social Policy and Social Work.
- £264,485 from the Medical Research Council to study the regulation of energy metabolism during human blastocyst formation. The grant holder is Professor Henry Leese, department of Biology.
