£8.5m in new research grants

New research grants worth £8.5 million were announced at the University of York's meeting of Council on 20 November. This continues York's successful record in attracting research grants and contracts from industry, government, the EU, research councils, and charitable bodies. New grants are announced at the University Council four times a year. Last year (1997/98), the University received grants totalling £20.7m.
New grants include:
- £1,034,260 from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council for a Structural Biology Centre at York. The grant holder is Professor Rod Hubbard, department of Chemistry.
- £44,157 from the Department of Health for a study on rough sleepers and homeless people's access to general medical services. The grant holder is Mr Nicholas Pleace, Centre for Housing Studies.
- £20,329 from the Economic and Social Research Council to study public understanding of models and simulations. More and more technical information coming into the public sphere derives from computer models, whether it concerns climate change, flood patterns or prospects for the economy. Using case studies, the project will make recommendations on ways to promote the public understanding of technical models and their outputs. The grant holder is Professor Steve Yearly, department of Sociology.
- 80,036 ECU from the European Commission for a comparative analysis of conversational styles in Italian and English to highlight intercultural differences and communication difficulties. The grant holder is Dr Paul Drew, department of Sociology.
- £32,250 from the UK Offshore Operators Association Ltd to identify, evaluate and disseminate information about teaching and learning resources related to the oil industry. The grant holders are Professor David Waddington and Ms Miranda Stephenson, department of Chemistry.
