University boat crews go to Argentina

Eleven members of the University of York Boat Club have been invited to take part in an international regatta in Buenos Aires this month. They will be the guests of the Universidad del Salvador, one of Argentina's leading universities. The crews leave for Argentina on 18 November, together with ten pairs of oars. They will enter the single scull, double scull and eights events at the regatta.
The invitation to the regatta follows a visit by Dr Keith Mander, Head of Computer Science at York to Argentina in April this year. One of the universities he visited was del Salvador, a modern campus university near Buenos Aires. "The campus has a very large lake, specifically designed for rowing, and the University has a very active rowing club," said Dr Mander. "They extended an invitation there and then for our oarsmen to visit and take part in their international regatta."
"The training has been very hard as we have had to work on 500m sprints in the middle of the long distance (5000m) season," said Men's Captain Laurence Pidcock. "But the training is coming along well and we feel we will be ready for the challenge."
