£3.5m in new research grants

New research grants worth £3.5m have been announced at the University of York. The University, which is one of the UK's leading research institutions has seen its market share of research contracts increasing faster than most other universities. The Financial Times this week named York the UK's top provincial university, placing it 6th out of 100 higher education institutions.

New grants include:

  • £55,000 from BP International Ltd for the development of science education resources. The grant holder is Professor David Waddington, Department of Chemistry.
  • £15,000 from Business in the Community for a 'Regeneration through Heritage' website project, which will study the reuse of redundant industrial buildings. The grant holder is Dr Michael Stratton, Centre for Conservation Studies.
  • £1,650 from the DTI for a pilot study of the defence industry supply chain. The grant holder is Professor Keith Hartley, Centre for Defence Economics.
  • £35,000 from Eli Lilly and Company Ltd to study the costs of breast cancer. The grant holder is Dr P Dolan in the Centre for Health Economics.
  • £118,884 from the Economic and Social Research Council for a regional study of violence in early modern England. The grant holder is professor Jim Sharpe, Department of History.

More research grants will be announced in July.
