The University of York has received a significant increase in its grant for teaching and research from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
The increase follows on from the University's outstanding performance in the Research Assessment Exercise (December 1996) and the ongoing Teaching Quality Assessments.
The grant for the academic year 1997/98 is a 7.7 per cent increase over 1996/97, the third largest percentage increase in the funding council's allocations for 89 universities.
"The University has done well in this allocation of funding, but it deserved to do well," said Professor Ron Cooke, Vice-Chancellor. "York's performance indicators are excellent and this allocation is due recognition of that."
"The difficult financial conditions in which we operate remain, however. This relieves the pressure but it does not solve the problem. There is little available funding for capital projects or new equipment - investments which are vital to research-led universities like our own."
The Higher Education Funding Council have applied a new method for funding research to the results of the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise, saying that they have been able to "invest significantly in world class research" and that they have "concentrated resources in excellent departments".
