The Times annual league table of universities published today (23 May) places York in 6th position. Last year York was 7th and it was 8th in 1995.
The table of 96 universities is compiled by The Times using a variety of statistics and performance indicators. The two official indicators - those of teaching quality and research assessment - are given the most weight.
"York's position reflects its outstanding performance in teaching and research. The official ratings for these two areas demonstrate that our academic quality is good and is improving year on year," said Professor Ron Cooke, Vice-Chancellor.
"There always has to be a degree of caution in commenting on 'league tables', but I am pleased to see that The Times' definition of a 'good' university places a strong reliance on academic quality."
