The podcasts are designed as short teasers to inspire followers of the book club to expand their reading and conduct their own research into a variety of topics ranging from medieval monsters and printing presses, to Viking dialect and the global appeal of Charles Dickens.
One podcast will be featured on the book club, which is hosted on Instagram and supported by the York Festival of Ideas, each month. The first episode features Dr Lydia Zeldenrust talking about the global appeal of monsters and how not all stories cast them as villians.
Other experts in the series include Professor Helen Smith; Professor John Bowen; Professor David Atwell; Professor Jon Mee; Dr Matthew Townend; and Dr Alexandra Kingston-Reese.
Book for July
The podcasts can be found on IGTV on Instagram, as well as the York Festival of Ideas Facebook page and Twitter channel. They form part of The Story of Things podcasts, which can be downloaded from any preferred podcast app or listened to online via SoundCloud.
The Quiet Place Book Club invites staff, students, graduates, and members of the public to join their reading group on Instagram. They are currently reading Ingo by the late Helen Dunmore, who was also a graduate of the University's Department of English and Related Literature.
The club announces one book each month throughout the year and experts in the Department provide comments and thought-provoking questions to encourage debate and guide shared reading.
Expert reaction
There are also posts providing expert reactions to literary news headlines, national events, and seasonal topics, as well as the book shops and libraries where experts like to read, research, browse and buy books old and new.
Books in the book club are all related to areas of teaching and research in the Department, across all genres and age-ranges, as well as literary events in the York Festival of Ideas 2018.
