Scouts and Guides

YorNight was a fantastic opportunity for all levels of Scouts and Guides to try out something new and to work towards badges and awards.

On the day, a special Scouts and Guides passport was available with suggestions of things to do, as well as a YorNight badge.

 

Visiting the YorNight event could contribute to the following Interest Badges and Skill Builders:

  • Helper Interest Badge
    • Speak to some of our researchers about finding ways you can help the world and living things. Why not ask them for tips on how to reduce waste at home? 
  • Book Lover Badge
    • Visit our Explore the Facts library stand and see how many types of books you can discover on their YorNight shelf, and how many more can be found at your local library. Show off what you discover in a creative way - why not make a treasure map or a special bookmark? 
  • Drawing Interest Badge
    • Look out for our Graffiti wall and create a drawing bigger than you! 
  • Nature Interest Badge
    • Plants grow inside, outside, in a pot and in the ground. But what about in the lab? Discover how to grow plants in a test tube, and see if you can grow your own.
  • Innovate Skill Builder - Stage 1
    • Science is everywhere - in your kitchen cupboards, in your bath and even in your birthday cake. Take a look around YorNight and try out experiments of your own. What’s the science behind Jelly Babies or cheese? 
  • Innovate Skill Builder - Stage 2
    • Are you ready to become an inventor? Be inspired by the inventions you see at YorNight and create something brand new and brilliant.
  • Influence Skill Builder - Stage 1
    • What is (and isn’t) a fact? Go on a fact-finding hunt with our Explore the Facts library stand and discover the answers on their shelves.
  • Make Change Skill Builder - Stage 2
    • Do you think the same things as everyone else? Take part in Generate and find out the results.
  • Reflect Skill Builder - Stage 2: 
    • Ask some ‘why’ questions around YorNight and see where this one word can take you. Why not ask our researchers about their work?
    • Take a bus journey to the Barbican and explore one of the places that makes up York’s community.  

Visiting the YorNight event could contribute to the following Challenge Awards and Activity Badges:

  • My Skills Challenge Award
    • Go somewhere new, then learn five facts about somewhere new. 
  • My World Challenge Award
    • Do at least one activity to help you learn about the natural world around you.  
  • Personal Challenge Award
    • You could set yourself the challenge to visit the YorNight event and then tell your Colony or a Leader about three interesting things that you saw or did there.
  • Disability Awareness Badge
    • Discover something new about how we see and find out what it's like for people with sight loss.
  • Experiment Activity Badge
    • Look for ideas for experiments that you might like to try - but remember to talk to your Leader before you try them!
  • Explore Activity Badge
    • Decide where to explore - why not make this the YorNight exhibition?.
    • Think about what you expect to find.
    • Go on the exploration.
    • Tell other Beavers what you have discovered.
  • Global Issues Activity Badge
    • Learn how to save energy or recycle.
  • Photographer Activity Badge
    • Take 10 or more photos of the YorNight event to show to your Leader or other Beavers. 
  • Space Activity Badge
    • Find out about a space mission, an astronaut or a planet in our solar system.
    • Learn about the different constellations and how to recognise them.
  • Air Activities Staged Activity Badge - Stage 1
    • Talk to someone who has flown in an aircraft, helicopter or hot air balloon. What was it like? 
    • Find out about one kind of aircraft and tell others in your section about it. 
  • Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge - Stage 1
    • Discover lots of uses for digital technology in everyday life.

    • Why not stop by our Graffiti stand and experiment with a new way of painting on our Graffiti wall? 
  • Space Interest Badge
    • Wander the Universe with our scientists and enter our inflatable planetarium. Learn about the constellations and see if you can identify them in the night sky.
  • Zero Waste Interest Badge
    • What can you do to help the environment? Learn about air pollution and tell scientists at the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories stand where you think they should go next.
  • Collecting Interest Badge
    • Why not visit our animal bones collection and record your thoughts? 
    • Are they kept safe? 
    • What are they stored in? 
    • How do they make you feel? 
  • Local History Interest Badge
    • York Minster is one of the oldest cathedrals of its kind in Europe - why not stop by our Playing with Sounds stand to learn a fun fact about its design? 
  • Grow Your Own Interest Badge 
    • Ever heard of plants growing in test tubes? Stop by our Plantlet Culture.com stand and try growing a plant of your own. 
  • Archaeology Interest Badge
    • Explore the findings made by our archaeologists and take inspiration for a discovery of your own - what objects would you find? 
  • Jobs Interest Badge
    • Find out what it’s like to be a researcher compared to two other jobs: 
      • What challenges do they face? 
      • What makes it fun? 
      • Would you like to be one? 
    • What other jobs can you find at YorNight? 
  • Reflect Skill Builder - Stage 2
    • ‘Why?’ is one of the most important questions you can ask. Ask some ‘why’ questions around YorNight and see where this one word can take you. Why not ask our researchers about their work?

  • Our World Challenge Award:
    • Take part in an activity about the environment. 
  • Personal Challenge Award:
    • You could set yourself the challenge to visit the YorNight event and then tell your Pack or a Leader about five interesting things that you saw or did there.
  • Astronomer Activity Badge 
    • Find out about two space-related subjects and present some information about them. You could find out about planets, the history of space exploration or space technology. 
    • Explain the difference between a planet and a star. 
    • Identify three constellations. 
  • Disability Awareness Activity Badge
    • Discover some ways in which people with hearing loss can be helped to hear.
  • Environmental Conservation Activity Badge
    • Find out how to reduce the energy and water you use in your home.
    • Find out about one type of renewable energy. Talk to your Leader about the advantages and disadvantages of the technology.
  • Local Knowledge Activity Badge
    • Find out about a famous person who lived in or near your area. The famous person could be from the past or present. Talk about what you find out with your Leader or other Cubs.
  • Photographer Activity Badge:
    • Take 10 or more photos of the YorNight event to show to your Leader or other Cubs. 
  • Scientist Activity Badge
    • Look for ideas for activities that you might like to try - but remember to talk to your Leader before you try them!
    • If you carry out an activity at the event that links to 'reactions', 'interacting with energy' or 'living things' you can explain or show your Leader what you did and what you found out.

    • Talk to someone who has flown in an aircraft, helicopter or hot air balloon. What was it like?
    • Find out about one kind of aircraft and tell others in your section about it.

    • Be a journalist - why not use your skills to investigate and report on YorNight for your Unit? 
    • Could you interview someone involved?

    • Be a scientist - experiment and test hypotheses! Test your memory with York Memory Games. 
  • Photography Interest Badge
    • Why not capture the YorNight exhibition through your lens? Speak to your leaders beforehand about taking some test photos and about how you can experiment with different photography techniques. 
  • Vlogging Interest Badge
    • Why not make one of your three vlogs about YorNight? How was your experience? What did you see?
  • Conscious Consumer Interest Badge
    • Feeding the planet sustainably is one of the biggest challenges facing society today. Come along to EatBugs! to discover a meal with a difference and take inspiration for a sustainable dinner of your own. 
  • Explore Skill Builder - Stage 4
    • Enter our inflatable planetarium and discover the constellations. Can you use your newfound knowledge later to help you navigate by the stars? 
  • Reflect Skill Builder - Stage 3
    • What sorts of things do you have in common with your friends? What makes you all unique? Take part in our Generate activity together and kick-start your discovery.

  • Personal Challenge Award
    • You could look for inspiration for a personal challenge. For example, you might find a topic that you are interested in for you to talk about with your Patrol.
  • Skills Challenge Award
    • Take part in an activity that requires a number of problem solving skills.
  • Astronautics Activity Badge
    • Look for information to support your research for this badge.
  • Astronomer Activity Badge
    • Look for information to support your research for this badge.
  • Electronics Activity Badge
    • Attend a YorNight technology talk and discover the uses and benefits of assistive technology in everyday life. 
  • Environmental Conservation Activity Badge
    • Find out about an environmental issue that is important to your local community.
  • Librarian Activity Badge
    • Stop by our Explore the Facts stand and discover how to use a library catalogue, how fiction and non-fiction books are arranged on shelves, and what is meant by a reference book or material.
  • Local Knowledge Activity Badge
    • Discover the acoustic history of local heritage landmark York Minster. 
  • Media Relations and Marketing Activity Badge
    • Why not create some media content for the Group, District or County newsletter, Scouting Magazine or online about YorNight? 
    • Interview a local public figure - why not talk to the scientists about their research?
  • Photographer Activity Badge
    • The YorNight event could provide opportunities for you to take some photographs as part of this badge.
  • Scientist Activity Badge
    • Look for ideas for experiments or activities that you might like to try and discover how they are linked to the real world.
  • Writer Activity Badge
    • Why not use something you see or hear at YorNight as inspiration to create one of the four writing pieces required for this badge?
  • Air Activities Staged Activity Badge - Stage 1
    • Talk to someone who has flown in an aircraft, helicopter or hot air balloon. What was it like? 
    • Find out about one kind of aircraft and tell others in your section about it. 
  • Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge - Stage 1

    • Visit the exhibits, chat to the scientists and attend some of the talks to gather information to support your chosen area of interest. In particular, look out for activities relating to astronomy, electronics and radio communication.
