YorNight is a fantastic opportunity for all levels of Scouting and Girlguiding to try out something new and to work towards badges and awards. Here are just a few suggestions of things you might like to do.
Recycling Badge: Be a recycling superhero. Can you find out how you can help renewable energy?
Drawing Badge: Find our exhibits about ancient art. Make your own art, using theirs as inspiration.
Recycling: How can you save the Earth? Follow our researchers' advice on how to reduce waste and live green.
First Aid Badge: Discover what is inside your body and how it works.
Innovate Skill: Experiment and test your inventions:
- Have a go at controlling a robot. Make it race across the floor!
- Science is everywhere - what's the science behind your favourite food?
Network Skill: Fancy building a robot? Now's your chance to find out how. Practise by experimenting with magnets.
Reflect Skill: Ask some 'why' questions and see where this one word can take you. Ask our researchers about their science!
Lead Skills: Lead your team to victory in our interactive activities.
Sensory Safari Activity: Enter virtual reality and see how different it is from real life.
My Skills Challenge Award: Go somewhere new. Then find out five facts about something new.
My World Challenge Award: Do at least one activity to help you learn about the natural world around you.
Air Activities – Stage 1: Find out about one kind of aircraft and tell others in your section about it. Talk to somebody who has flown in an aircraft, helicopter or hot air balloon. What was it like?
Experiment Activity Badge: Try out one or more experiments.
Explore Activity Badge: Explore the YorNight exhibits and activities.
Global Issues Activity Badge: Learn how to save energy or recycle.
Photographer Activity Badge: Consider using YorNight as the theme for your photographs. (You need 10 pictures for the badge.)
Space Activity Badge: Look out for activities which will help you cover elements of the badge, including:
- Point out some of the things you can see in the night sky. It could be stars, the moon or planets.
- Point out and name at least one constellation you can see.
- Name the eight planets in our solar system and draw or make a model of one of the planets. You could use papier-mâché to make your model.
- Find out about a space mission, an astronaut or a planet in our solar system.
Local History Badge: King's Manor was built in the 15th Century. Explore YorNight and follow in the footsteps of kings!
Collecting Badge: Start a collection from the interactive exhibits that you can show off.
Reflecting Skill: DNA-mazing! Dive into the fascinating world of genetics - now in VR.
Baking Badge: Follow new recipes of food science with jelly. If you're still hungry, try some bugs!
Painting Badge: Discover art that is millions of years old. View the photographs of ancient Ice Age art and make your own artwork.
Mindfulness Badge: How can you keep your mind healthy? Learn the importance of talking.
Archaeology Badge: Throw yourself into history. Help our scientists and get hands-on with scientific equipment.
Space Badge: Wander the universe with our scientists. Enter our inflatable planetarium. Can you identify the constellations?
Zero Waste Badge: What can you do to help the environment? Learn about air pollution and tell their scientists where to go next.
Jobs Badge: Visit the 'Ask a scientist' stand and find your dream job. Girls can do anything!

Astronomer Activity Badge: Look out for activities which will help you cover elements of the badge, including:
- Explain the difference between a planet and a star.
- Learn how to observe the sun safely. Find out and explain how the earth moves around the sun.
- Observe the moon, using binoculars or a telescope if you can. Describe some of its features.
- Identify three constellations.
- Find out about two space-related subjects and present some information about them. You could find out about planets, the history of space exploration or space technology.
Environmental Conservation Activity Badge: Look out for an opportunity to:
- Find out how to reduce the energy and water you use in your home.
- Find out about one type of renewable energy.
Photographer Activity Badge: Take photos while you’re at YorNight.
Scientist Activity Badge: Have a go at one or more of the six science activities required for this badge.
Photography Badge: Visit a photographic exhibition of Ice Age art and take your own pictures of the exhibition.
Investigating Badge: Be a scientist - experiment and test hypotheses! Test your memory with York Memory Games.
Fitness Badge: Want to learn the secrets of football? Then join our team.
Conscious Consumer Badge: Help the planet. Find out how you can help produce green renewable energy.
