Mark Sculpher is a health economist based at the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York. Having graduated in economics from the University of Leicester, he had his first spell at York to do a MSc in health economics. His early research and PhD topic was in the economic evaluation of medical technologies, with a particular focus on minimally invasive surgical procedures where patients trade-offs in risks and benefits compared with open surgery. Since moving to York again in 1997, he has developed a large programme of work looking at the value of different types of medical intervention. He has a particular interest in developing evidence and analysis to support challenging resource allocation decisions in the NHS and other systems internationally.
