Shannon Croft

Shannon Croft is an Archaeology PhD student at the University of York, and part of the European Research Council funded POSTGLACIAL Project. She investigates tiny organic residues that are amazingly preserved on stone tools from the Mesolithic period (9600 - 4000 BC). She looks for the evidence that hunter-gatherers left behind, showing how people made and used stone tools. The residues are identified both microscopically and chemically, giving us a detailed picture of ancient people's technologies, as well as plant and animal processing. She loves the thrill of excavation and the discovery of new artefacts, which reveal past secrets in their microscopic residues.
