Nurashikin is pursuing a PhD at CNAP working with Prof. Simon McQueen-Mason and Prof. Neil Bruce. Her project is part of the “Compost Project”, which includes several researchers at CNAP and collaborators at the University of Sao Paolo, Brazil. The project focuses on new effective enzymes to degrade lignocellulosic biomass that contains high sugars and has potential as a renewable source of biofuel. She is currently trying to identify such novel enzymes through bacterial profiling, including transcriptomic and proteomic studies, as well as protein production. She is also attempting an evolution experiment on cellulolytic bacterium to increase its’ performance during the decomposition of wheat straw.
