Katrin is a research scientist in the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products at the University of York, with an interest in sustainability. Her current research focuses on enzyme discovery for efficient, sustainable biofuel production from plant biomass. She is studying a marine woodborer that lives in and feeds on wood, degrading any wooden structure it can find in the sea. By understanding the animals’ digestion mechanism, we can learn new ways of plant biomass deconstruction into simple sugars and copy the method to make bioethanol using sugars derived from plant waste material.
