Andy Needham is a PhD student at the University of York, studying Archaeology. He specializes in Palaeolithic art from the Magdalenian period (18,000 – 13,000 BP). He further studies beads and ochre from the Mesolithic period (9600 – 4000 BC) Andy uses microscopy and experimental replication to try and understand every engraved line and brush stroke in a piece of art and to exactly reconstruct how it was made. Andy’s interests are united by a desire to understand how hunter-gatherers used material culture to negotiate their social and spiritual worlds. Andy has a passion for excavation and has worked on Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites in the UK, France and the Channel Islands.
