2016 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the FIFA World Cup 1966 which was won by its host nation, England, and is one of the most well-known success stories in British sporting history. Ahead of this anniversary, two ‘Soccer Mad Boffins’ from The York Management School present findings from their FIFA-sponsored management history project which investigated the previously under-reported story of the organization, management, and legacy of the event. This short-talk sheds new light on what happened behind the scenes, including matters of international diplomacy, and how the event was used to showcase UK government’s national plan. Furthermore, the research takes a critical view of the modern-day recollection of the 1966 World Cup and of ‘the swinging 60s’ by looking more critically at the economic and management climate of the time.
