Even seemingly innocent actions can have extremely negative consequences for wildlife and nature. For the last 50 years, human activity has been causing devastating, yet unintended, damage to marine animals. We will discuss the impact of 20th century shipping and technological developments such as sonar for sea life and the marine environment. These developments have had dramatic effects on several marine species, such as whales, a group of species for which echolocation is important for finding prey but may be disrupted by naval exercises in their neighbourhood. How has our understanding of these costs increased, and what can be done to counteract them?
