Event details

Gels are fascinating soft materials with which we come into contact on a regular basis – from jelly babies to hair gel - but what is a gel, and what gives it its special properties? Are they solids, or liquids?  This exhibition will bring you face to face with some everyday gels, and explore some of these questions, giving you an insight into the hidden world of gels down at the nanoscale.  You will also get the opportunity to test your chemistry skills by making a gel.  Here in the Chemistry Department at York, with our in-depth understanding of gels, Professor Smith’s team is now beginning to use them for some new high-tech applications.  At the exhibition, you will be able to talk to some of the researchers involved, and find out how our smart gels are being applied for drug delivery, environmental rescue and tissue engineering.
