Research conducted by the CAPACITIE project (Cutting-Edge Approaches for Pollution Assessment in Cities) aims to develop new methods and technologies to detect and monitor existing and emerging pollutants. Some of the pollution we face in today’s urbanised areas is left over from our cities’ past, from rapid industrialisation, motorised vehicle use and the practice of using coal for homes’ indoor fires. In addition, the current increased use of diesel vehicles, industrial chemicals, veterinary and human pharmaceuticals, and personal care products is exacerbating the effect that pollutants have on the human population and wider ecosystem. The CAPACITIE Project focuses on four research themes to aid our understanding of city pollution: end-user needs and stakeholder engagement; identification of emerging pollutants; development of emerging technologies for pollution monitoring; and data capture, analysis and use to support city planning. This exhibition will aim to develop adults’ and children’s perception and understanding of pollution, through the use of interactive games and scientific demonstrations.
