Aydin Berkin is studying for a degree in Biology at University of York and as part of the course has spent the last year as a research intern at CIRCLE, based at Flamingo Land.
“My research involves using a conservation model developed by the Udzungwa Forest Project (UFP) in East Africa to guide biodiversity conservation planning on a 325 acre site at Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo. The Holistic Indicator Selection Protocol (HISP) leads to the development of a strategic plan using internationally recognised standards, and combines this with expert opinion to rank the importance of conservation indicators. I am also assisting with practical conservation work in the area, including the planting and maintenance of thousands of new tree saplings to encourage native biodiversity.”
