Dr Andy Marshall is Director of CIRCLE (Collaboration for Integrated Research, Conservation and Learning), a University of York Environment Department partnership with Flamingo Land, the UK’s most visited zoo.
“I began my career with a zoology degree, but following many years spent researching the biodiversity and threats to tropical forests, I became increasingly aware that it is the plants and the people that are the key to conserving them.”
“My research has therefore ranged from primate behavioural ecology, tree community modelling, forest carbon assessment, conservation breeding, and descriptions of new species, to biodiversity action planning, assessing methods for environmental education, and evaluating the impacts of conservation legislation for African villagers. Hence, when I founded CIRCLE in 2010, I established an interdisciplinary focus to the research work, in an attempt to really get to the heart of biodiversity conservation.”
"The aim of CIRCLE is to carry out ground-breaking research that will contribute to the conservation of wild animals and places, and to disseminate the information in a manner that is accessible, interesting and fun."
