Sarah Fiddyment was awarded a prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship to apply her biochemical expertise to the study of proteins preserved in parchment. She has now been awarded a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue with this research.
“I started my career wanting to become a medical doctor. I attended medical school for three years, but frustrated by the lack of scientific enquiry I decided to specialise in biochemistry with the hope of becoming a medical researcher. Having successfully obtained my MSc and PhD in cardiovascular research I felt that I had still not found my niche. During my PhD I had attended courses on the application of scientific techniques to cultural heritage, and was inspired to pursue my research career in this new field. Having previously specialised in protein analysis, archaeology offered a wonderful avenue to bridge the gap between my scientific training and its practical application to cultural heritage.”
