Gareth Dean began working in archaeology as a volunteer in 1996. He completed a Masters in Field Archaeology while working in commercial archaeology in England.
“From 2003 I worked for York Archaeological Trust working on a wide range of sites in York and the surrounding area before beginning a Collaborative Doctoral Award at the University of York funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in collaboration with York Archaeological Trust. This focussed on the medieval development of the city’s former Roman fortress from c.600-1600. Using published and unpublished archaeological evidence in conjunction with cartographic and historic evidence, my research shed important new insights into the social and spatial development of the former fortress area through the medieval period.”
