Keri Rowsell (BSc, MSc) is a PhD student at the University of York. Her project concerns poverty and nutrition in England during the long eighteenth century, particularly focusing on potato consumption and scurvy, and combines analysis of human skeletal remains with historical research.
“I first became interested in osteoarchaeology during a work experience placement at the Museum of London, where I saw how much can be learnt about a person’s life by studying their skeleton. My specific area of interest is diet, the diseases that result from malnutrition, and how these affect the body. I especially enjoy the challenge of combining osteoarchaeological techniques with laboratory analyses and historical documents in order to build a complete picture of diet and disease in the past.”
