Ignazio Cabras is a reader in Economics, Business and Management at Newcastle Business School and a Fellow of the York Centre for Complex Systems Analysis at the University of York. His research is focused on economics and environment, with a particular emphasis on local economies, community cohesion and social capital. At the moment, he’s looking into how social networks in peripheral and remote areas are developing local communities and businesses.
“I’ve conducted several studies on the impact of pubs in enhancing the levels of community well-being in rural areas. Pubs work as catalysts for a wide range of community initiatives and activities in villages. Despite their importance, these places have suffered a significant decline in the recent pasts, depriving many communities of crucial centres for social aggregation. My studies aim to provide sustainable solutions to practitioners and policymakers that can help to preserve pubs from non-necessary closure, maintaining these places at the centres of social life in rural Britain.”
