Francesco Carrer is an Italian archaeologist, who graduated at the University of Padua and achieved a PhD at the University of Trento. His main research focuses on landscape archaeology, mountain archaeology and the study of the material remains of past animal farming societies.
“In particular, I am interested in understanding how the different strategies of farming shaped the upland landscapes in the alpine region. At YorNight I will talk about the evolution of alpine dairy farming and products, from the traditional small-scale production to the modern international dairy companies. I will also look at how these transformations affected the mountain landscapes.
“I grew up near the Dolomites, where I used to go hiking, so I got to know the alpine environment quite well. This led to my interest in the role of mountains as key areas in understanding the complex relationships between human societies and environment.”
