Dr Florentina Taylor is a Lecturer in Education at the University of York. Her research explores identity, motivation and engagement in learning and teaching. With support from the British Council and the British Academy, she has worked with thousands of participants (mostly students, but also teachers) from the UK, Bulgaria, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain.
“I have always been fascinated by how much we can learn from young people if we care to listen. They do understand a lot more than we give them credit for, and yet we often forget that – as teachers and as parents. Research shows that young people are happy to work hard and follow our advice if we value their perspective and help them understand how the advice we give them today will make a difference in their lives tomorrow. They need our help, experience and maturity, but they also need to be allowed to participate actively in their own education and, ultimately, life.”
