Labman and the Rapid Sample Reformatter Tom Plowman, Labman
Event details
York Society of Engineers lecture
Labman is a growing company based near Stokesley in North Yorkshire producing custom laboratory automation and products – in a better term, robotics. These bespoke solutions are generally the answers to monotonous laboratory testing, be it the weighing and mixing of paints and coatings, liquid handling, high-throughput sample preparation or image analysis, to name a few. No problem is too big or small and Labman enjoys the challenge of developing a custom solution resulting in a timesaving or quality-improving system designed specifically for the customer.
Aside from bespoke systems, Labman has a smaller products division and develops custom software solutions in-house, in response to the growing need for software and the ability to integrate 3rd party equipment.
Tom will focus on one of the more recent systems that Labman have produced, in a record turnaround of 4 weeks - the Rapid Sample Reformatter. This is a newly developed system in response to the COVID 19 pandemic and the throughput issues suffered by labs across the globe. It removes a bottleneck in the processing of swab-based PCR tests. The liquid in a tube requires reformatting into a well plate for analysis in a PCR machine to give the positive or negative COVID result. By removing multiple user steps, the semi-automated system reduces error, improves sample tracking, and reduces the amount of manual labour. In a 24hr period it can process 20,000 samples.
